This anecdote is an unedited cross post of Valerie Roney’s Mastodon post about making an ER trip less awful. The original post can be found here.

Valerie also runs a website here for those interested in her other works.

The Anecdote

K. Meandering thoughts (pffft executive function) on a non-awful ER visit that may be useful for other folks.

I no longer view ER as a safe place that will take care of me when I am in crisis (pausing while you all laugh at my latent hope and innocence).

Essential Oils

What’s Here

An Anonymous reader let us know there a few good pacing guides for ME/CFS, long covid and covid up at meaction.net that may be good resources as staring points related to pacing.

There are a number of common ways to cook grains

Cooking them with extra water so they are more like porridge

Cooking them really runny like cream of wheat (maybe with coconut milk or something if you don’t have other milks in house)

Adding sugar and coconut milk (and eggs) a la rice pudding

Making congee - a savory rice porridge with chicken (or other) stock. A tonne of variations of flavors from here, once you start thinking savory

And also salads, like tabouli salad but swapping in other grains, quinoa is really nice I know for sure, haven’t tried amaranth

I’ve done a lot of research into Shibari and related topics. Someone accidentally helped me unlock the world of rope such that I can get my head around it in a manner that’s safe. Previously, for personal reasons I don’t plan to share publicly, I could not engage with this topic beyond “that’s certainly interesting but not for me”.

Over the years I’ve gotten to know a good number of kinksters and someone who’s eligible to be certified as a rigger at their local, well known dungeon. I’ve never backed out of the discussions but I’ve also minimally engaged due to those previously mentioned “personal reasons”. Everyone got along and I ended up with a solid catalog of knowledge related to Shibari and more.

Minor Day Surgery

The Scene

Two disabled humans discussing surgery and medical test preparation procedures that can cause great harm. They have been comparing notes and cross referencing useful tricks for improving pre and post procedure outcomes.

An Anecdote

…

Like, when I had my tubes tied 10yra ago that “minor” surgery wrecked 1 me.

In hindsight I would have said, I can’t do no eating/drinking 12hrs before because my body doesn’t hold water well. I went into the surgery already dehydrated, and afterwards couldn’t stop barfing because morphine, and they wouldn’t let me go until I peed, but of course I couldn’t pee because I was dehydrated af.

Negotiating With Doctors

You can negotiate with doctors

It may not be obvious but you can negotiate with your doctors about accommodating needs for what would normally be a trivial procedure, but isn’t for us [the disabled].

Even with a pacing strategy, adaptations when you know you are going to encounter a major challenge to your system can be important and discussing options with a health care provider should address these challenges.

However, providers tend not to offer alternatives, adaptations or strategies unless prompted. It usually best to initiate a conversation with your provider instead of waiting for them to offer.
